Gary Avery, J.D. often tells people that the reason he’s so valuable is that he can’t keep a job. He started his career as a Junior High teacher, went to law school at night and practiced law as a municipal attorney and assistant county prosecutor, also counseling several school boards. Oh, yes, there were also the four years during which he taught law and accounting at a major Midwest University. Prior to joining Law Advisory Group he was national chair of a committee of the National Institute of Municipal Law Officers and co-authored the first publication of the American Bar Association dealing with municipal purchasing cooperatives.

In 1987 he began his own consulting business teaching the staff members of one of the nation’s largest unions to conduct effective arbitration hearings. Law Advisory Group asked him to design police-school partnership programs and train our trainers. In the early 1990’s he became active in the pursuit of better results for Special Education students. His emphasis was on empowering schools to concentrate on transitioning students from complete dependence to independence to the greatest degree possible.

He is the legal advisor to the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officials (NASSLEO) and the author of “Safety, Order and Discipline in American Schools”, use by Law Advisory in its courses and by colleges and universities in Criminal Justice courses. Over 150,000 copies are in circulation. It is now in its 10^th edition.
